The Bargaining Council for the Restaurant, Catering and Allied Trades (BCRCAT) has introduced revised prescribed minimum rates per hour and levy adjustments, effective 1 June 2026.

Revised Minimum Rates Per Hour

The updated minimum hourly wage rates applicable from 1 June 2026 are as follows:

  • Chef or Manager – R57.65 per hour
  • Assistant Manager – R40.46 per hour
  • Junior Sous Chef, Bartender, Cashier, Clerk, Security Guard, Guard, Supervisor – R35.95 per hour
  • Assistant Bartender, Assistant Cashier, HC, Cook, or Waiter – R33.00 per hour
  • Baker, Cook, or Catering Assistant – R32.92 per hour

Employers are required to ensure that their employees are remunerated in accordance with these prescribed minimum rates.

BCRCAT Levy Adjustment

In addition to the wage increase, the monthly BCRCAT levy has been adjusted as follows:

  • New levy amount: R23.00 per employee per month
  • Employee contribution: R11.50
  • Employer contribution: R11.50
  • Establishment fee: Remains unchanged at R30.00

Employers must ensure that the correct levy deductions and contributions are implemented from the effective date.

Compliance and Practical Considerations

The implementation of these increases requires employers to review and update payroll systems to reflect the new minimum rates, ensure that employee remuneration structures comply with the prescribed minimums, adjust levy deductions and employer contributions accordingly, and communicate changes clearly to affected employees. Failure to comply with bargaining council agreements and the accompanying stipulations may expose employers to enforcement action and potential penalties.

Looking Ahead

Employers are encouraged to take proactive steps to align their practices with the updated requirements and maintain compliance with applicable collective agreements.

We encourage employers, IR/HR professionals, and legal practitioners to engage with these developments and share their insights.
